Nergiz Kern
 |
I'm Nergiz Kern and I've been an EFL teacher since 2000. I've always liked technology so, naturally, I am interested in educational technology after learning about all the possibilities in last year's EVO session "Becoming a Webhead 2008". There is one tool, however, that I had already signed up before BaW 08: Second Life , a 3D virtual world. I believe that virtual words will play a vital role in education and have, therefore, been experimenting a lot with Second Life for teaching languages.
I will co-moderate "Virtual Worlds & Language Learning" with Graham Stanley and Nicholas Noakes.
|
 |
I'm Nick Noakes and work in educational development where my passions are emerging technologies in education and learning spaces. I was an ESL teacher and teacher developer before moving into teacher development full-time. My current position is Director, Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (http://celt.ust.hk). I've been involved as a co-moderator in two previous EVOs on Open Publishing and Digital Gaming & Language Learning; both with Graham Stanley. This year I'm again joining Graham, alongside colleagues Nergiz Kern, Dennis Newson and Chris Surridge, on the Virtual Worlds and Language Learning EVO.
My work website is linked from my name above. I blog ever so occassionaly here but have probably blogged more as my avatar here. Second Life = Corwin Carillon

Rita Zeinstejer
 |
A veteran Webhead, having entered the inspiring community in 2002, I was furnished and enriched with the knowledge, the experience, the wisdom of all and every member --and with the fortune of meeting professionals and friends from all over the world.
I have been a mentor in my area, coordinating the CALL SIG for EFL teachers since 2001, have delivered f2f and online seminars both locally and abroad, as a participant in different Conferences and Congresses –LABCI, FAAPI, TESOL, IATEFL, as well as in various projects involving teachers and students from different countries.
I have been integrating Internet tools into my f2f classes using blogs, wikis and many different applications with my students, and given presentations on my work.
I have also published several articles in Essential Teacher –TESOL magazine-- as well as in the APrIR magazine, a local EFL production.
I have organized --and currently coordinate-- the Multimedia Centre at the Asociacion Rosarina de Cultura Inglesa, the private Institute where I am also a Director for Advanced Courses.
I am happy to share the moderation of what looks a promising venture, together with Robert Squires and CK Jung -- 'Enhancing Lessons: The Web 2.0 Way'.

I am an ESL instructor at The University of Montana in Missoula. I have found great professional community among the webheads, so it is nice to see some familiar names among these introductions, and I am looking forward to getting to know many others better. CK Jung, Rita Zeinstejer and I will be presenting 'Enhancing Lessons: The Web 2.0 Way'. I think we are going to learn a lot from the chance to reflect and share experiences. I'm JoAnn Miller. I've done many EVO sesssions, but take off occasionally, like last year. I give a session for newcomers to the Internet.... Unbelievably there still are a lot out there. My session is for absolute beginners...those who have basically only used the Internet for checking email.
I've been living and teaching in Mexico City for over 35 years. I've used computers since they came out (my first recorded data on a tape recorder), but I'm still a beginner...I just can't catch up...
I'm looking forward to collaborating with all of you.

Hi All,
I'll be co-moderating the EVO Video session with Kristi Reyes, Cora Chen, and Elizabeth Hanson-Smith.
After traveling and teaching ESL for a few years, I went back to school for an MFA in Motion Pictures/Television at the AAU in San Francisco. I was lucky enough to team up with writers Natasha Haugnes and Beth Maher (and a small team of designers) to develop Short Takes Interactive. In my last semesters at the AAU I took a couple php classes to learn how to make a "quiz builder" to add to eslvideo.com. I continue to add updates whenever possible (whenever i get the code right! Ha!) These days I work as a producer of multimedia for CompareNetworks Inc -- parent company of biocompare.com, dentalcompare.com, medcompare.com, and ophthalmologyweb.com.
I'm very happy to be part of EVO again, and to be co-moderating with such an awesome team.

Hello all, and welcome to the moderators' training for the EVO 2009 sessions :-)
Like many of you, I'm excited to take part in this training session. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Aiden Yeh, and I also take on various roles in EVO as a participant, coordinator, and mentor. I have been involved with EVO since 2002. Back then, I offered a discussion-based session about managing non-native English teachers (NNESTs). After five years, I am happy that EVO is going to have another session for and about NNESTs. Ana Wu and Yi-lin Sun of the TESOL's NNEST Interest Section will be joining me in this session.
I am also happy to announce that I will be mentoring Alison Milofsky and Valerie Jakar from the 'teaching conflict resolution' session. This is a topic that is also dear to me, and I look forward to working with Alison and Valerie.

I’m an EVO enthusiast with a difference. I do not claim to be a Webhead. More a Fumble-fingers.
My fields of interest are content-based language instruction – with a focus on multicultural and global issues (including Peace studies) – and mentoring new and struggling teachers, plus sociolinguistics, which is my academic persuasion. The two EVOS I am involved with reflect my interests and I’m happy to be working with Alison Mojto for one and with Laura Stoutenburg for the other. Our topics are not CALL oriented, but our sessions are definitely dependent on all those 'fun' tools we are about to practice using.
Laura and I ran a Mentoring EVO in 2006 and we will be following up on what's special about mentoring teachers of English. Alison, a conflict resolution specialist, is going to introduce people to 'Conflict Resolution in the Classroom, activities for English language learners'. We're looking forward to lots of creative discussion with ESOL teachers around the globe. Meantime, we're happy to be coached and mentored by our EVO peers. We are privileged to be able to set up the pre-Denver discussions and I know that Gertrude and team (organizers of TESOL Denver, 2009) are excited about hosting EVO people at the next convention.
I had a wonderful year, convening the convention for 2008, in New York, NY, meeting so many super teachers (including our Elizabeth!) and creating opportunities for building communities of learning and teaching. It was especially gratifying that EVO participants were out there in their hundreds, many meeting face to face for the first time. Here’s to Denver, 2009, for more meetings of that ilk!

I am a special advisor to the Education Program at the United States Institute of Peace where I facilitate workshops and develop materials to assist educators in integrating peace education and conflict resolution into their classrooms. Most recently I have worked with English teachers from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Central Asia. I was previously a teacher trainer in the Slovak Republic while in the Peace Corps and taught English as a Second Language at the University of Maryland and Georgetown University. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in education policy. While I have facilitated on-line discussions in the past, I am not very tech savy. That said, I am very much looking forward to co-facilitating an EVO on Conflict Resolution for English Language Learners.

Hi all,
I'm Saša Sirk from Nova Gorica, Slovenia. I'm an EFL teacher at a small local college in Nova Gorica (www.tscng.net), where I teach students of informatics, mechatronics and countryside management. Since 05 I took many invaluable EVO courses (in 06, 07 and 08), and I helped moderating week 1 in BaW 08. It's now fun to look back in time and see how my
teaching practice has been changing year after year. And it's fun to look back and see how my attitudes to teaching and learning have been changing year after year. I am greatly indebted to you, my dear webheads and EVO people - it was mostly through you that I realized what a wonderful job it is to be a teacher.
I'm looking forward to another chapter as a member of the BaW team, and as an EVO participant.

Hi everyone,
I'm Graham and although I'm in my 40s I'm a young "digital native" wannabe at heart (hence the photo) - I work as a teacher of English to Young Learners in Barcelona, Spain and also teach undergraduates of Tourism (ESP, CLIL) at a private university and Further Education students of Audio Visual subjects at a polytechnic. I am also project manager of the British Council's 'Learn English Second Life for Teens' project and am currently teaching a short blended learning course (CLIL) in 'Virtual Tourism' to university students (using Second Life). I'm also involved in ICT teacher training and am happy to be back co-moderating the 'Language Learning and Virtual Worlds' EVO session this year. As well as all of this, I (naively) hope I can also fit in writing a novel at http://www.nanowrimo.org/ in November (but think this if this is probably not possible unless I give up sleeping!)

I have taught ESL in a higher education setting since around 1975 and have been at the Maryland English Institute (University of Maryland College Park, USA) since 1981. I took Becoming a Webhead 2006 and have been interested in using web tools in life and teaching ever since. Other than helping out during one week at BaW2007 this is my first time moderating a session. The tools I have used most in my nearly 3 years as a webhead include blogs (especially blogger and wordpress), VoIP, wikis (pbwiki and wikispaces), and Tapped In.
I will be co-moderating Enhancing Lessons: The Web 2.0 Way.
Married to Christoforos Liakos, who was born in Greece and is a naturalized US citizen. We have one daughter, Vicki, age 16.

Ever since I joined BaW06, I have found in this community the incentive to use new web apps. I'm currently working with Alicia and a team of teachers in the MM project that Rita coordinates at ARCI. My philosophy is 'nobody teaches anybody, we all learn together' so I'm delighted to share my experience as a co-mod of Enhancing Lessons with Web 2.0.

I'm an EFL teacher from Rosario, Argentina. I have been teaching English at my own institute for over 20 years now.
As for my experience of ICTs, I took a course on Teaching English Via the Internet, and another on Instructional Design for E-Learning, certified by the UTN (Universidad Tecnológica Nacional)
However, I can say that my real involvement with the new ICTs and their implications for language teaching and learning started two years ago, when I joined the CALL SIG coordinated by Rita Zeinstejer. Then, I took the BaW08 course, which I always refer to as a turning point in my life, both professionally and personally.
Now I am delighted to be in the moderating team of ''Enhancing Lessons.'' I really hope I can give something in return for all I have received from this wonderful community.

I have been working with English as a second language for a long time. This includes training of in-service teachers and teacher development. I have been lucky to have the opportunity to work with teachers at all levels at school and from different types of schools. I have been touring India and have conducted sessions and workshops for teachers in different states. This has been my greatest learning experience.
In addition, I have been training and mentoring pre-service teachers at the pre-primary, elementary and secondary level cross-culturally and across lingusitic societies.
My current assignment is to work with 'to be pre-primary teachers', elementary teachers and teachers in special education to the visually impaired. The last one also was an eye-opener when in order to help my students, I took some classes with the actual students. It is a totally different world out there when English is not your language and you need to perceive things and learn vocabulary and concepts using your auditory and other senses.
I hope to get new persectives from our YG discussions.
I look forward not only to getting a deeper insight into EFL and ESL but also the use of technology in networking and education. I am actually trying to find my feet in the world of Web and Internet.

I am from Taiwan and have been teaching English to Chinese speakers of different age groups for more than 15 years. I received my MA in English Studies from Nottingham University, UK. There I studied with Prof. Ronald Carter, an internationally known scholar in stylistics, discourse analysis, and lexical studies. I received my PhD from the Department of Foreign Language Education of the Ohio State University, USA. Though my major was second language acquisition, I was very interested in drama. Thus, I chose theater education as my minor and met Prof. Cecily O’Neill, an international authority in process drama, at OSU. I was interested in the interaction patterns and discourse nature of teacher and students when innovative approaches were applied in a foreign language classroom. This area was rather new to researchers, language teachers, and theater people at that time. This was my motivation to work with Cecily, and later wrote a book with her, entitled, “Words into Worlds: Learning a Second Language through Process Drama.” (ISBN 1567503691), based on my dissertation and several other studies about how language learners and teachers interacted in drama-oriented language classroom.
I am teaching at the Department of Foreign Languages & Literature, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan.

Hi Dafne,
Why can't we use point-and-click editor for this wiki? I couldn't add my picture to this page.

I second Sedat in using the latest Pbwiki 2.0. The upgrade is easy. There is a link on top of the wiki page and in the bottom right-hand corner. Just a matter of seconds.

I suggest using wikieducator. It has none of these issues and we can work on the same pages at the same time. The tables are problematic with wikispaces, too.

Sedat, The wiki has been set with the point-and-click editor. I am using it. I see your picture there now.
Nergiz, we have not upgraded this wiki to pbwiki 2.0 because in order to have everybody edit, we would need to add everybody´s email (more than 80).
Nellie, we might follow your suggestion for the next training :-)
Cheers,
Daf

I added my profile last night, and today it was gone, and so was my account. But my photo was still in the uploaded files. My name didn't appear in the TOC last night.
Now, I've re-added my profile, and . . . oops . . . I have my whole profile in the TOC. (I'm enjoying learning about this.)

Hi Linda. Don´t worry if something gets lost in the wiki. There is the history page where you can retrieve your information. I have fixed your profile (not in the TOC now) ;-)
Cheers,
Daf

I finally managed to get everyone on the table of contents. Apparently the 3 after Dafne were set in the center (even if they appeared on the left side) and therefore could not be viewed in the table of contents. Don't ask, it took quite a few tries to get things right. :)

When you add your picture, click on it with your right mouse and in the image properties put the WIDTH = 100 .That will make your picture of the same size as others are.
While adding a table, in TABLE properties delete width and height at all. That will make your table of the same size like others.
To make your name appear in the TOC you have to highlight it and click on HEADING 3.

Nina, Thanks for your tip about the TOC. As for my picture, I can't figure out how to adjust the size though...mine is bigger than everyone's! Could someone please help me out?

Mary--
You can click on the picture and then pull in the corners (if you pull on the sides you may get interesting effects!)
If you find things have disappeared, maybe you forgot to save--looks like the case where a picture was found saved, but not the text.
This particular comments page doesn't have point-and-click. On other pages we have it. If you want to edit a table, the easiest way is to go to the Source. I really like PBWiki--it's generally about the easiest/most convenient to use.

Dear Mary, it's easy: click on your picture ---> Image Properties ---> put in the Width '100' ---> then 'OK'
That's it. Your picture will be the same size as others.
